A Journey of Leadership, Growth, and Unforgettable Memories

Reflecting on my two years as captain of the University of Miami Hurricanettes dance team, I can’t help but feel a sense of pride and gratitude. These years have been filled with incredible highs and tough lows, but through it all, I’ve grown in ways I never imagined, not just as a dancer, but as a leader and mentor.

The journey hasn’t always been easy. There were moments when balancing academics, leadership responsibilities, and the pressures of performing at a top-tier level felt overwhelming. There were countless practices, late-night rehearsals, and the weight of being responsible for leading such an incredible group of women. But through the challenges came lessons that pushed me to grow both personally and professionally.

One of the most rewarding parts of being captain has been seeing the development of the team as a whole and witnessing my teammates’ growth—not just in their dancing, but in their confidence, teamwork, and dedication. As a leader, I learned that it’s not just about what I can give to the team in terms of technique or choreography, but also how I can lift others up, encourage them, and serve as a mentor. Being able to offer support and guidance in and out of the studio has been a privilege I truly cherish.

This year, I had the honor of being recognized for my contributions at our end-of-season banquet during the bowl game in Orlando. The recognition was a humbling moment for me. It’s one thing to lead and give everything you’ve got, but it’s another thing entirely to have your efforts acknowledged by the very people you’ve dedicated yourself to serving. To be celebrated by my teammates and coaches for the hard work we’ve all put in over the past two years was a full-circle moment. It’s these moments that bring me the most joy in my life—knowing I’ve helped the people I love and been able to guide them in ways that go beyond just dance.

Being captain of the Hurricanettes has taught me the true meaning of leadership, resilience, and community. The challenges I’ve faced have shaped me into the person I am today, and I’ll forever be grateful for the opportunity to serve as a mentor, not only in dance but in life. These years will always hold a special place in my heart, and I know the lessons I’ve learned will continue to guide me in everything I do.
